The Buddhist Center: building community online

Tag: India

Another ‘Buddhist Voices’ episode from the end of the Triratna Buddhist Order Convention 2013 at Bodh Gaya in India. A pretty fantastic discussion with two ‘dharinis’ - young, inspired Indian Dharmacharinis who speak boldly about the challenges faced by women practising the Dharma in India.

A wonderful conversation too around issues of leadership and taking one’s place in the sangha in order to come alive and help others. Very exciting listening!
Lokamitra is the ideal person to talk about the amazing transformative influence of the Dharma on people’s lives. Its power to effect change in Indian society in seemingly intractable areas like caste offers a hopeful glimpse of the future for any Buddhist community with aspirations to embody the Buddha’s teachings on the pre-eminence of mind in shaping the world we inhabit.
From all over the world members of the Triratna Buddhist Order have come to Bodh Gaya in Bihar, India to celebrate their community and sense of shared aspirations and values. From the traditional mythic seat of the Buddha’s Enlightenment we’ll have a week of coverage as all these women and men from many cultures re-dedicate themselves to the task of facing down suffering and engaging with the best in each other and in the world.
What better way to mark our Indian month on the Buddhist Centre Online than to present this updated version of Sangharakshita’s classic book on the life and sayings of the great Indian teacher Anagarika Dharmapala, one of Sangharakshita’s choices for his ‘Great Buddhists of the Twentieth Century’ list?
Viveka from San Francisco and new friends from India on the Interational Council
It’s been a quiet period for Triratna News recently, with just one bulletin in the past three weeks. However there’s a lot going on in Triratna and on thebuddhistcentre.com, with the second-ever meeting of Triratna’s International Council taking place in India this past week.
A very special extended edition of the podcast with Lokamitra, one of the first generation of Order members and founder of so much of the Triratna Movement in India. A chance then, on a day of explorations around leadership and the future, to turn our attention to India. Any conversation with Lokamitra tends to the fascinating and this is no exception. Much to ponder, and a chance to celebrate a complex, generous man whose work has benefitted so many for 35 years…
Just to give you a feel of the place… Includes the latest flower mandala! :)
Nagaloka, Nagpur

It is relatively quiet here. (Just wedding music playing in the evenings and the constant pipping of horns in the middle distance on the Kamptee Road.) It is also very beautiful – well kept open spaces with lawns and flower gardens, purpose built buildings and the massive walking bronze Buddha overlooking it all. So I’m aware that I haven’t yet really seen India yet, that will come later. But it is an amazing location for the second Triratna International Council which is just starting.
Here’s the Powerpoint slideshow that accompanied Lokamitra’s most inspiring talk
Lokamitra is a true pioneer of Dhamma work. A founding figure of Triratna in India, home of the Buddha, he’s been steadily working together with teams of friends to revitalise Buddhism in its native land.
